about

As residents of sunny Singapore almost all our lives, we wondered why no one ever writes songs about their neighbourhoods (Or if they do, we wonder why we find it so cringey). Is it because places like Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh and Serangoon just have a weird ring to it? Or is it because we glorify, even mystify the concept of being overseas, being immersed in some other culture other than our own? I have to admit I'm guilty of that. So we decided to write this song - a strange ode to home. Maybe its because I'm Asian and expressing sentimentality is uncomfortable, but whatever this feeling is, it is what it is.

lyrics

Don’t fly over
Don’t fly over
On this porch
The sky is calling

Photograph
The wheels are turning
When I came back
The ground was rumbling

They filled the fields
With brand new cities
Slowly sprouting
Into countries

From Boundary Road
To Braddell’s inlets
All this building’s
Got me moving

But all I want
Is to see this place
At rest

Don’t fly over
Don’t fly over
From this porch
The streets they call you

I climbed the hill
To reach a garden
But all that’s left of home
Was broken

From Chartwell Drive
To Lorong Lew Lian
Serangoon’s northern half
Was growing

They breached the grounds
Of police stations
For disparate charms
Of condominiums

And it’s a sign
We’ll never stay
At rest

Intertwine my foolish thinking
Tightly round these walls
In due time we’re slowly leaking
Features in this squall

Intertwine my foolish thinking
Tightly round these walls
In due time we’re slowly leaking
Bidadari’s trees have fallen

I see your canopy
Your vast silhouette by night
Your branches grew like arms
Stretching up to hold the sky

Twisting
Turning down the old jogging path
I saw the bright white of the new industrial fence
The ground split by imprints
Footprints

And shoes soaked
Soles worn out by sediments
I feel the damp soil after the rain
The dark forest trail at dusk

Like a sparrow’s first song
Long lost to the night
I held your still small voice in my arms
A baby’s coo muffled beneath the dampened
Chatter of crickets

Like at the coming of the Lord
As fresh dew disappears by noon
The wind takes you home
